A 30-year-old foreign national bound for Dushanbe checked a bag containing a large sum into hold baggage while using the green channel himself. X-ray screening of his hand luggage revealed dozens of bundles of RUB 1,000 and RUB 5,000 notes — equivalent to USD 313,000.

He initially denied carrying cash during questioning but admitted it during a personal search.

A criminal case was opened under Article 200.1(2)(a) of the Russian Criminal Code, with penalties from a fine of ten to fifteen times the undeclared amount to up to four years’ restriction of liberty.

FCS Russia reminds travellers that cash in roubles above the equivalent of USD 10,000 must be declared in writing when crossing the EAEU customs border.
