A 69-year-old German national arrived from Poland by car without declaring cash subject to declaration. Inspection found more than EUR 53,000 and RUB 18,000 (USD 62,130 equivalent); USD 52,130 exceeded the USD 10,000 limit for undeclared movement.
Excess funds were seized. A criminal case was opened under Article 200.1(2)(a) of the Criminal Code (cash smuggling on an especially large scale), with fines up to fifteen times the amount or restriction of liberty for up to four years.
Cash above USD 10,000 equivalent must be declared in writing on import; above USD 100,000 requires proof of origin. Declaration does not entail duty or tax on the declared amount.
