According to an FCS Russia press release, Kazan postal customs found 30 kg of radioactive beads for costume jewellery in parcels from China.
Gamma radiation exceeded the limit by more than fifteen times. Two shipments were addressed to a St Petersburg resident and contained jewellery blanks in 235 zip bags; paperwork described them as glass ornaments.
After radiation monitors alarmed, surface dose rate on the packaging was 1.23 µSv/h. Analysis detected thorium-232 (Th-232) and beta radiation. Release was denied and the parcels were returned to the country of dispatch.
