Far East customs break musk deer musk smuggling channel

According to a press release by FCS Russia, customs in the Russian Far East disrupted a channel for smuggling Siberian musk deer musk abroad.

Far Eastern operational customs officers seized a shipment bound for an East Asian country: 300 dried musk glands weighing 4.7 kg plus 131 g of musk secret, valued at 12.3 million roubles.

Investigators identified alleged group members — two Russian nationals and a foreign citizen. They are said to have exported the goods by sea disguised as food; the foreigner reportedly sought buyers abroad while the Russians handled procurement, preparation and transport.

A criminal case was opened under Article 226.1(3) of the Criminal Code (large-scale smuggling of strategically important resources by an organised group). The inquiry continues in cooperation with the Federal Security Service Directorate for Primorsky Krai.

Musk deer glands and musk fall under CITES; cross-border movement requires written declaration and permits presented to customs.
