FCS Russia: Контрабанду более 100 тыс. долларов США пресекли шереметьевские таможенники

FCS Russia said that Sheremetyevo customs officers stopped an attempt to carry more than USD 100,000 in cash without declaration.

The Russian citizen flew in from Istanbul and was due to continue to Kazan. Screening of transit baggage showed bundles of banknotes; officers identified the owner and removed him from his flight.

At the control area he refused to present the suitcase contents and tried to flee but was detained.

The search yielded notes of various countries totalling USD 110,634 equivalent, including Turkish lira, Azerbaijani manat, Brazilian real, Danish krone, Indian rupee, Romanian leu and Serbian dinar.

Authorities are considering a criminal case under Article 200.1(2) of the Criminal Code (illegal movement of cash on a especially large scale), punishable by up to four years’ restricted liberty or a fine of ten to fifteen times the amount. He had previously faced administrative and criminal liability for customs violations.
